Seventeen Composers List Their Favorite Anthems

We thought it would be interesting to Creator’s readers to ask some of today’s best-known composers of church music literature to pick their “Top Ten” list of favorites. Their responses follow, in alphabetical order by composer’s last name. All listings, unless noted, are for SATB voicing. Many of the titles, however, are available in other voicings, and some are available with brass, handbells, woodwinds, full orchestra, and/or trax accompaniments, which is not included for space reasons. Craig comments: “The list is a mixture of my highest-selling anthems and others that have a lot of personal meaning for me. “Behold the Lamb of God” probably moves me most. It is also heavily influenced by Brahms, one of my favorite composers. “Be Not Afraid” is interlinked with the circumstances surrounding my son, Adam, who died of leukemia. “Canticle of Heaven” was one of the most difficult to write and one that probably stretched me the most. “Sanctus” was premiered in the Vatican. “Thy Will Be Done” is my first published work and my most successful. “Musicological Journey Through the 12 Days of Christmas” was fun to write because I parodied 12 different composers.”

This assignment...was like picking between your own children! The list is not necessarily in any kind of order. These are simply ten anthems I’ve done that seem to have made significant impact on the worshipping church. I feel clearer than I ever have, the call on my life to provide excellent worship tools to aid in the relentless, weekly pursuit of a meaningful worship experience. Obviously, Sunday morning worship is an extension of Tuesday morning and Thursday morning worship...in that pursuit, which honestly is my own, personal desire to understand worship as a lifestyle, God has allowed these songs to articulate His goodness and glory in my life.
